SPECIAL EXHIBITS AND SHOWS

*Aquarium Pyramid Renovation – Wave 8: Jan. 9, 2017 – May 26, 2017 Aquarium Closed

Grand Reveal: May 27, 2017 Memorial Day Weekend

A multi-phased renovation is underway at the Aquarium Pyramid. As we continue with this project, Moody Gardens guests can look forward to a fun and awe-inspiring experience wonderfully complemented with conservation messages that underscore the vital importance of the oceans. New exhibits will not only inspire visitor interest and empathy, but also connect visitors to specific ocean habitats. Visitors will travel from the Gulf of Mexico to the South Atlantic, South Pacific, North Pacific and Caribbean. Each ocean exhibit highlights different marine sanctuaries and different aspects of our relationship to the seas. Upon completion in May 2017, there will be a variety of new exhibits and surprises, including the addition of jellyfish and tropical penguins.

Penguin Encounter Program

The Moody Gardens Penguin Encounter is a 45-minute program designed to allow guests to get up close to one of the penguins from the Aquarium Pyramid South Atlantic Exhibit.  Led by a Moody Gardens biologist, the experience starts at the front of the exhibit and takes guests behind the scenes to the penguin food preparation kitchen and the back of the chilly penguin exhibit while discussing penguin biology, conservation, training, enrichment and care. Participants will experience the cool climate, sounds and even smells of the exhibit and witness a penguin create a work of art as part of an enrichment activity for the animal. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Aquarium Pyramid on the day of the encounter. Participants must also purchase admission to the Aquarium Pyramid. Please call 800-582-4673 ext. 4102 or email [email protected].

Giant River Otter Encounter Program

Our keepers will take you behind-the-scenes of the Rainforest Pyramid for the rare opportunity to meet our Giant Amazon River Otters. Learn about otter biology, conservation and how these amazing animals are cared for in their private interior Otter Exhibit area. You can then join us for a public Keeper Chat about otters.  This 30-minute Otter Encounter is offered on Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. only.

SpongeBob SubPants Adventure – In the Discovery Pyramid

Internationally recognized as 2016 THEA Award Winner for Outstanding Achievement, dive into adventure on a submarine voyage along with SpongeBob SquarePants and all your Bikini Bottom friends! On this wild and silly deep-sea expedition, YOU choose the destination and YOU interact with your hapless captain – Patrick Star! Tickets are $18.95 for adults and $16.95 for seniors and children.

Dinosaurs in Motion – In the Discovery Museum

Dinosaurs in Motion features 14 life-size dinosaur sculptures made of recycled metal. The sculptures were created by artist John Payne and are fully interactive. The exhibit is presented to guests in the form of a narrative as an apprentice’s journey through the art and science present in the space before ending in a journeyman’s workshop. Guests are encouraged to touch and interact with all elements of the recycled metal dinosaur sculptures while they explore the exhibit space. The exhibit will be in the Discovery Museum through May 14, 2017.

Secret Ocean 3D

Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of ocean pioneer Jacques Cousteau, has been exploring Earth’s oceans for nearly 70 years. Now, with revolutionary equipment, Cousteau brings to 3D screens a breakthrough look at a secret world within the ocean that is perhaps the biggest story of all – that the smallest life in the sea is the mightiest force on which we all depend. Jean-Michel, alongside marine biologist Holly Lohuis, invites audiences to dive into this whole new world with Secret Ocean 3D that will leave audiences in awe of the beauty and diversity of the oceans and inspire an even stronger desire to protect what they have seen for the first time.

Great White Shark 3D

Misrepresented, maligned and misunderstood, the Great White Shark is an iconic predator: the creature we love to fear. Great White Shark 3D will explore the great white’s place in our imaginations, in our fears and in the reality of its role at the top of the oceanic food chain. Narrated by Bill Nighy, see the great white through the eyes of people who swim with sharks in the MG 3D Theater.

Amazing Mighty Micro Monsters 3D

Super powers exist – right here on Earth and they are beneath our feet. They include beetles that shoot chemical fire and lift enormous weights, scorpions that glow in the dark with astonishing crushing powers, spiders that can make themselves virtually invisible and hypnotise their prey and even a bug that can transform itself into another creature entirely. Prepare to be amazed in this 3D giant screen adventure exploring the hidden world of the super-powered bugs.

Jerusalem 3D

Jerusalem 3D takes audiences on an inspiring and eye-opening tour of one of the world’s oldest and most enigmatic cities. Destroyed and rebuilt countless times over 5,000 years, Jerusalem’s enduring appeal remains a mystery. What made it so important to so many different cultures? How did it become the center of the world for three major religions? Why does it still matter to us? This film attempts to answer these questions by following three young Jerusalemites – Jewish, Christian and Muslim – and their families.
